The technical stand-up from open mat
Use a technical stand-up when seated on open mat with room between you and the other athlete. One hand and the opposite foot support the hips while the other leg withdraws underneath. The free hand stays available between you and your partner.
The diagrams explain positions and decisions. Independent coach review is pending. Practise contact entries and finishes on mats with a qualified coach.

Illustrated checkpoints
- Set your supports. Plant one hand and the opposite foot while facing the partner.
- Make clearance. Lift the hips enough for the free leg to travel backward.
- Place the second foot. Keep a staggered base with clear space in front.
- Return to guard. Stand facing the partner, and step away under control.
Check the distance first
Rehearse on a clear mat with no one pressing down on you. Sit on one hip, place one hand behind you within comfortable reach and plant the opposite foot. Keep the free hand in front. Press through the support points just enough to make space for the free leg. Avoid putting a hand far behind you and leaning all your weight onto a locked elbow.
Recover the stance without turning away
Draw the free leg back beneath you, place the foot on the mat and rise facing the same direction. The feet should finish apart. If they cross, slow down and check where the second foot actually lands. In a cooperative rep, the partner should be far enough away that the moving leg can clear without collision.
Decide when to stay down
If the partner crowds your hips, step back to the guard-retention lesson. Forcing the stand-up can expose the back or leave you balancing on one hand underneath them. Progress from the solo movement to a partner who takes one step back or stays nearby. Stand only on the retreating cue. Keep kicks and punches out.
