MMA academy review & safety checklist

Score what you observe at a trial class, record serious warning signs and print a gym checklist to compare visits.

Watch an actual beginner class before signing. Score an observed yes as 2 points, partial as 1, and no or unconfirmed as 0. A gap in what you saw is a question to ask. A serious warning calls for action regardless of the total.

CoachingThe gym can name the lead coach and explain how to verify their qualifications.The coach describes relevant experience teaching the class you will actually attend.Beginners receive an introduction before joining partner drills.You see the coach notice an error and give one specific correction.The coach explains how someone moves from solo practice to partner work.You can ask what a drill teaches and receive a clear answer.

Sparring cultureBeginner sparring is optional and supervised.Partners agree on targets, pace and level of contact before the round.Students can choose technical drills without pressure to fight hard.Coaches match partners for experience, size and control.Someone intervenes when a round exceeds its agreed contact level.Both partners know the stop signal and the gym’s procedure after suspected concussion.

HygieneStaff can explain when and how the mats are cleaned.Loan equipment is cleaned and dried between users.Footwear stays off the mat and students put shoes on for the toilets.The gym has a clear policy for a new or suspicious skin lesion.Staff have a procedure for blood or an uncovered wound.Students can wash their hands and find clean facilities.

Facilities & membershipThe mat joins, cage padding and surrounding floor are in good repair.The coach checks the protective equipment required for each drill.One coach can see and supervise all the active pairs in the class you observe.Staff can explain how emergency services reach the mat.Someone on duty can identify the first-aid kit and first-aid cover.Fees, trial terms, cancellation and notice periods are available in writing.

What to ask after a trial class

Ask who will teach the next class, how partners are chosen and what happens when someone wants to sit out. If no one can explain a rule, watch the next session before committing to a contract. This scoring method is an original observation aid. It confers no accreditation.
