MMA Q&A
How can I identify an MMA gym with unsafe sparring practices?
Watch how the coach responds when a round goes wrong. Stop and step away if a partner ignores a tap, the coach pressures a dazed student to keep going, or beginners must accept hard head contact to take part.

Watch the coach, then the pairs
Before a round, each student should know the task, permitted targets and how to stop. A coach should be able to see the pair and interrupt if the pace rises. Notice whether a much more experienced partner can follow the limits when a beginner loses balance or freezes.
Ask one specific question
Ask what happened the last time somebody felt dizzy after a blow. A meaningful answer identifies who stops the session and how staff arrange assessment and emergency help. Asking a fighter to finish the round to prove readiness is a reason to step off the mat.
Compare the promise with the session
Ask to observe and to take a class without sparring. Note whether declining contact changes how staff treat you. Clean facilities and impressive fight records cannot compensate for ignored stop signals or a coach who sends a possibly concussed student back into contact.
