Adjusting your stance for kicks and takedown threats

An MMA stance changes as the opponent moves. A lead leg loaded for a jab can be slow to check. Shifting far back to free it can make a wrestling entry harder to read and meet. Train the adjustment in both directions.

The diagrams explain positions and decisions. Independent coach review is pending. Practise contact entries and finishes on mats with a qualified coach.

Illustrated checkpoints

A lead foot, two balanced footprints and raised gloves link the kick or shot cue to stance recovery.
The useful stance changes with the opponent. This map asks which limb can move and where balance finishes.
  1. Test the jab. Pause at the end of the punch and check where the weight sits.
  2. Read kick or shot. Use the partner's hip turn or closing level change as different cues.
  3. Recover a movable base. After each response, check whether you can take a step without rocking first.

Start from a stance that already works

You should be comfortable with a single jab, a shadow shin check and a small hips-back defense. Place two temporary markers beside your feet while shadowboxing. Throw the jab and freeze. Can you free the front foot without moving the rear one? After a check, can you replace the lead foot where it supports a change of level?

Use two different cues

The partner stands out of contact range. A slow turn of the rear hip marks an outside kick. A clear level change plus a step marks a leg attack. Answer the first with a shadow check or withdrawal. Answer the second with a balanced hips-back movement. Staying in a low wrestling crouch for the whole drill defeats the point because no strikes can reach you here.

Find what caused the late response

A front foot planted heavily after every jab can delay the check. Hopping back on every level change can leave you unable to meet a second step. Try a shorter stance adjustment and repeat at walking speed. Add a single pad touch afterward only if you reach it without lunging. Do not combine real kicks and takedowns in this beginner test.
