From a boxing combination to a double leg

A punch combination can draw the hands up and bring you close enough to wrestle. Take the entry only if the feet have closed the distance. Reaching for legs from the end of your jab is a common way to miss.

The diagrams explain positions and decisions. Independent coach review is pending. Practise contact entries and finishes on mats with a qualified coach.

Illustrated checkpoints

Three icons link recovering the guard after punching, checking the space, and changing level for a coached entry.
The punch does not guarantee a takedown. The partner’s reaction decides whether to enter or stay balanced and reset.
  1. Double jab. Recover the hands while bringing the feet to usable range.
  2. Read the hips. If the partner has stepped clear, end the exchange.
  3. Change level. Lower on balance and enter only when the distance fits.
  4. Catch and release. Pause at both legs under supervision before adding any finish.

Pick a combination you can stop

Start with a jab and a second jab marked on focus pads. You should know the solo level change and be able to stop a double-leg entry before the finish. In Tyron Woodley's instructional example, a double jab supplies the setup. It is one option. If the second jab sends the partner backward out of reach, take your stance back.

Read what is below the gloves

A high guard on its own is a poor signal. Look at the gap to the hips and the balance of your last step. When the partner stays in place behind the pads, bring back the punching hand before making a clean level change. If you land with your chest past the front knee, take an exit and practise shortening the step.

Move from pads to a cooperative catch

First have the holder call “enter” or “exit” once the punches return. On an entry cue, finish the solo step beside a marker. For partner work, switch to suitable training equipment and remove handheld pads before grappling. Add a controlled catch without the finish. Save the descent for a separate coached rep on mats.
