MMA Q&A
How do I transition from a punch combination into a takedown?
Recover your hands and check where the partner’s hips finished. If the last punch has brought you to a balanced entry distance, change level and step in on the coach’s cue. If the partner has moved away, reset your feet.
The diagrams explain positions and decisions. Independent coach review is pending. Practise contact entries and finishes on mats with a qualified coach.

Visual field note
What the combination is supposed to tell you
A jab and rear straight give a partner a reason to cover, step back or angle off. Those reactions leave three different pictures. A tight cover may leave the hips in range. A retreat usually opens the gap. An angle changes which side you can approach. Counting two punches cannot tell you which picture you have.
Separate the read from the finish
Start with shadow punches and a level change on a mat marker. Next, have a coach hold a target and choose whether to stay or take a step back. A correct decision to stop is a successful repetition. Only add a cooperative wrestling partner once the entry itself is familiar.
Check the extra step
If you have to stretch your arms or pitch your chest forward to catch the legs, show the coach that exact distance. Practising the finish at speed will hide the entry problem. Work through the illustrated transition and double-leg lessons separately before combining them.
