Separate the level change from the entry step
Reaching for a leg and stepping into range can look alike at full speed. USA Wrestling’s Level 1 lesson separates the change in height from the step that closes distance.

FIELD GUIDE / EDITORIAL COVERStarting point
Know your lead foot and find your wrestling stance on a mat. The publisher includes inside and outside entries in this part of its folkstyle curriculum. Your MMA coach will choose an entry for the particular opening and rules.
Two moments to spot
First, watch for the change in height before the wrestler travels forward. Then track the lead foot and where the body follows it. Try watching a second time with your eyes fixed on the trailing foot. It has to move if the base is going to follow the entry.
Common error and safe practice
A long reach from the waist can leave the hips behind. Rehearse the change in level and one quiet step, stopping on balance. Use a padded mat for knee-drop work, and save partner entries and finishes for coached practice.
