Rapid weight cutting and choosing an MMA division
For recreational MMA there is no weigh-in to make. If you compete, discuss a realistic division with your coach, a qualified sports dietitian and your clinician well before an event. Rapid dehydration can impair temperature regulation and put the kidneys and cardiovascular system under strain.

What a division tells you
An event limit sets eligibility at the official weigh-in. It tells you little about how your body will tolerate a cut. Ask for the written limit, weigh-in time and any repeat weigh-ins. A category that requires emergency weight loss close to the event is a reason to revisit the entry.
Why the time after weighing in matters
The number on the scale can fall quickly through fluid loss. The Association of Ringside Physicians warns that full rehydration takes time and that dehydration can contribute to heat illness and kidney failure. A bottle and a meal after the scale do not establish readiness to compete.
When a cut goes wrong
Stop the effort and get help if you become unwell. Confusion, collapse or a seizure during a hot cut is an emergency. Call local emergency services. For future preparation, discuss an achievable class and a longer-term nutrition plan with an appropriately qualified clinician and dietitian.
