What should I eat before MMA training?

Choose familiar food you digest comfortably. A meal that includes carbohydrate a few hours before class or a smaller snack closer to training can both work. The amount depends on when you last ate, your appetite and the session ahead.

Start with your timetable

For an evening class, one option is a normal meal several hours before training, such as rice with a familiar protein. If lunch was early and a full meal feels uncomfortable before grappling, try a smaller snack you already tolerate, such as a banana or toast. These are examples to try in ordinary practice.

Work out what suits the drill

A large meal just before wrestling may feel uncomfortable when a partner puts pressure on your abdomen. Try changing the timing or portion on a normal training day and note how your stomach feels. Taking in food and water throughout the day also influences how you arrive at class.

Get individual advice when you need it

Bring water and plan opportunities to drink. If you manage diabetes, food allergies, repeated stomach symptoms or a prescribed diet, discuss training nutrition with your own healthcare professional or sports dietitian. Ask for individual guidance before changing food or fluid intake to make a division.
