MMA rules
How do amateur and professional MMA rules differ?
An amateur event can change the round length, permitted techniques and required gear. For example, the adult IMMAF summary lists three three-minute rounds by default, plus approved shin guards and a fitted mouthguard. ABC professional rounds last five minutes.

What the referee will allow
At an adult IMMAF event, elbows, forearm strikes, knees to the head and heel hooks appear on the prohibited list. Adult rules do not apply automatically to juniors or younger athletes. Use the host's rule sheet for the exact event and attend its rules briefing.
What to check before accepting a match
Request the regulator's name, the rules edition, the approved equipment list, weigh-in arrangements and medical requirements. Ask how the organizer records the bout. IMMAF championship eligibility can depend on prior contests and the techniques those contests allowed, even when their promoter called them amateur.
An amateur tournament example
IMMAF's adult summary calls for a weigh-in on each competition day an athlete advances. That is a different planning problem from entering one professional bout. IMMAF also directs readers to the full rules and host authority. Keep the event pack and confirm any differences before entering.
