MMA Q&A
What is the difference between 4 oz competition gloves and 7 oz hybrid gloves?
Four and seven ounces describe nominal glove weights. A competition-style glove often has a compact striking surface, while a hybrid usually puts a fuller pad over the knuckles and leaves the fingers free. The particular model and the planned drill decide its use.

Read two actual specifications
Hayabusa lists its T3 4 oz MMA glove for training and competition, with layered foam and a hook-and-loop wrist closure. It lists its T3 7 oz hybrid for pads, bags and partner drills, with pre-curved layered padding and a two-strap closure. These are manufacturer descriptions. We have no independent impact or durability measurements for either pair.
Match the glove to your partner
A partner drill might involve taking turns finding a body lock with gloves on. It could also mean hitting a pad held against the body. Neither example gives permission for hard punches to the head. Ask which targets, glove type and contact rules apply. A heavier glove does not turn hard sparring into a safe beginner drill.
Do not assume a model is approved to fight
For example, the Nevada Athletic Commission publishes a make-and-model approval procedure for professional events. IMMAF also distinguishes its championships from equipment choices at other amateur shows. Ask the organizer what is approved and who supplies it before buying a pair for a bout.
An ounce is not a hand size
Two gloves with the same nominal weight can fit different hands. Consult the size chart for the exact model. Check whether you can close a comfortable fist, open the hand for grips and cover the hook fastener without the knuckle pad shifting.
