Choosing and fitting MMA gloves and hand wraps
Start with the job the glove must do. A close-fitting glove for gripping is different from a bag glove built to hit a target. The coach’s contact rules, the model’s intended use and the fit on your hand all need to agree.

Measure the hand that goes inside
Use the exact model’s chart. When it asks for hand circumference, take a soft tape around the knuckles at the widest part of the palm as directed. Record the measurement and its unit. Check both hands if they differ. A size letter from another product is only a starting point.
Check the glove with the wraps you will use
Have the coach show you how to wrap for that class. Smooth out folds across the knuckles, slip the glove on and close a natural fist. Check that fingertips and thumb sit comfortably, the striking surface stays over the knuckles and the cuff closes without exposed hooks. If the hand tingles or the glove twists, take it off and check the fit.
Choose the pair for the round
A closed boxing glove removes the open fingers used for gripping, which makes it a different tool from an MMA glove. Check the label on boxing gloves too. Rival, for example, specifically excludes its hard-padding bag gloves from sparring. Ask separately about pad work and partner work.
Before contact
Press along both knuckle pads to detect changes from the rest of the padding. Run a hand around the shell and cuff to find sharp edges. Ask the coach to inspect any doubtful pair. Worn bag gloves do not become partner gloves simply because they still fit.
Which glove does this drill need?
| Glove | Useful for | Fit, movement and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Competition-style MMA | Approved events or coach-defined grip drills | Open fingers permit grips. Compact padding and event approval vary by model. |
| Hybrid MMA training | Coach-approved mixed drills using hands and grips | Fuller knuckle pad may alter grip access. Confirm the intended targets and partner contact. |
| Boxing bag glove | Pads or bags listed for the model | Enclosed fingers suit striking targets. Some models use firm padding prohibited for partner contact. |
| Boxing sparring glove | Coach-approved supervised striking | Enclosed fingers limit grappling. Check size, condition and required weight with the gym. No glove removes head-impact risk. |
What to check on any pair
| Feature | Practical check |
|---|---|
| Padding | Feel both striking surfaces for thinning, hard spots or uneven compression. |
| Wrist and closure | Fasten the correct straps or laces. Check wrist alignment, closed hooks and cuff stability. |
| Finger movement | In MMA gloves, open the hand and make a fist. Check finger loops against your skin. |
| Care | Follow the specific shell and lining instructions. Dry the cuffs open. |
| Replacement | Stop using the pair if padding shifts, seams expose material or a strap will not stay closed. |
