Gear

MMA protective gear beyond the gloves

Bring the protection required for the actual activity and check its fit before the round. A shin guard that rotates, a loose mouthguard or an exposed hook fastener needs attention before you share the mat.

Shin and instep coverage

Put the guard on the correct leg and centre the pad over the shin. Bend the ankle and take a few steps in stance. If you repeatedly have to spin it back or the strap scrapes the other leg, change the adjustment or size. Ask which construction the coach permits for standing kick drills and for drills that continue to the ground.

Groin and ear protection

A groin protector should stay in place through a level change and squat. Tell the grappling coach if it contains a hard cup. Policies differ because a rigid part can press into another person during close work. If wearing ear guards, check for hard edges and secure straps before a partner round.

Sport-specific guidance can differ even between grappling events. United World Wrestling publishes separate uniform rules for its competitions. Check the actual organizer’s document before relying on training kit.

Mouthguard and wraps

Test mouthguard retention before putting on gloves, particularly if your teeth or dental work have changed. For striking, ask the coach to check wrap tension and knuckle coverage in the specific pair you will wear. A tight hand wrap inside an already small glove needs correction before punching.

One last partner check

Remove jewellery and cover hook surfaces with their own closures. If a clip, cup or hard shell sits between you and your partner where the drill applies pressure, pause and show the coach. An extra item of gear can change what is appropriate for the other person.
