Safety

Can I train MMA with a previous injury?

That depends on the injury, your current function and what the class includes. If pain, swelling, instability or an existing restriction affects the area, have a clinician assess it before returning to contact. Tell the coach what movements or contact you have been asked to avoid.

Describe the demands before asking for clearance

A knee can feel fine on the walk to the gym while a live scramble puts it under a different load. Explain whether the class involves pivoting, being taken down, landing, gripping or bearing a partner's weight. Ask which named activities you can try and what signs should make you stop.

Agree on a workable alternative

If a clinician approves solo work only, tell the coach before pairs form and agree on a drill that stays inside that restriction. A brace or tape cannot settle whether you are ready. Rebuild exposure gradually and stop a drill that brings on pain.

When medical care takes priority

Seek emergency care for a joint that appears out of place, a suspected fracture, severe pain or bleeding, or chest pain during or after exercise. Arrange assessment for ongoing joint or muscle pain. If you sustained a head injury, use the separate concussion pathway before returning to contact.
