Returning to MMA after a concussion

A clinician should direct your return to training. Being comfortable on a walk and being ready to take a shot are different milestones. Keep sparring off the schedule until a clinician clears contact and any applicable suspension has ended.

Explain what your training actually involves

A clinician may picture jogging when you say conditioning. Describe the sessions separately. Shadowboxing alone, hitting pads, drilling a takedown with a partner and wrestling live expose you to different chances of impact or a fall. Ask which activities fit your current stage.

Build back in stages

CDC describes a gradual return that starts with regular activities and progresses through light exercise before contact practice. The Association of Ringside Physicians adds combat-specific guidance. Tell the clinician if an activity brings symptoms back. Stop that activity and get guidance before progressing.

A date on a suspension is only one check

Commission suspensions can follow a bout and local requirements vary. Ask for the written restrictions, including any limit on sparring. A competition suspension can expire while symptoms or a medical restriction still apply. Give your coach the agreed limits before joining the class.
