MMA scoring practice: judge five fictional rounds

Choose a score for five fictional MMA rounds, then compare your reasoning with the ABC July 2025 scoring clarification.

Ruleset: ABC professional MMA scoring clarification, July 2025. These original, fictional rounds use that named edition. Event commissions may apply different rules. The ABC also publishes an August 2026 rules document with requested changes for November 2027; that is not the scoring edition used here.

Score only the events described. Scores list the winning corner first, except the final deduction exercise. These are learning examples, not official judge certification.

Round 01

Pressure without the better offence

Red walks forward for most of a close round. Blue lands the cleaner legal counters with a modest but clear effect. Red’s lighter touches do not produce the same effect. Neither fighter is seriously hurt.

Your answer

Reveal the answer and reasoning

Blue 10–9. Blue’s more effective offence takes this close round; walking forward does not erase it.

Round 02

A position is not a score

Red holds top position for three minutes without effective strikes or a credible submission threat. Blue later lands several effective body strikes. Red has no comparable offence; Blue’s advantage is clear but not large.

Your answer

Reveal the answer and reasoning

Blue 10–9. Judge what the position produced. In this example, Blue supplies the meaningful offence.

Round 03

A large margin

Red repeatedly lands damaging legal attacks and forces Blue into prolonged defence. Blue has little effective return and is significantly diminished, although still intelligently defending at the bell. Red’s advantage is large rather than total throughout.

Your answer

Reveal the answer and reasoning

Red 10–8. The described significant damage supports 10–8. Sustained dominance reinforces the large margin.

Round 04

The knockdown shortcut

Red scores a brief flash knockdown. Blue recovers promptly and the rest is competitive. Across the whole round Red has a small advantage, with no significant damage or sustained domination.

Your answer

Reveal the answer and reasoning

Red 10–9. A knockdown is evidence to assess, not an automatic point tariff in MMA. The stated overall margin is small.

Round 05

Apply the referee’s deduction

On the fighting alone, Blue earns a close 10–9 round. The referee officially deducts one point from Blue for a foul. What is the resulting round score, shown Red first?

Your answer

Reveal the answer and reasoning

9–9 after deduction. Start with Red 9, Blue 10. Subtract the referee’s one-point penalty from Blue; judges do not invent their own deductions.
